For Reservations: October thru March

The Owners

Scott and Susan Firczak welcome you to TailFeather Preserve. We’re excited to be Rowan County’s first privately-owned shooting preserve. Scott is a lifelong outdoorsman experienced in hunting birds, as well as trapping and fishing. Susan answers to the title of Kennel Manager as well as CEO.

The Preserve

Just over 200 acres, TailFeather Preserve is home to a beautiful mix of woods, fields, and streams. We enjoy a close working relationship with North Carolina biologists in order to plant and maintain native grasses and seed-bearing flowers that provide year-round nourishment for wildlife. The property was originally purchased from Three Rivers Landtrust (previously called The Landtrust of Central North Carolina) and is an established conservation property.

The Building

The excitement of your hunt grows as you enter “Birdie,” TailFeather Preserve’s business and operations center that was built by Scott’s brother, Rick. The warm welcome you encounter is reminiscent of a far-away hunting lodge. Help yourself to a fresh cup of coffee and enjoy the nostalgic hunt-themed artwork and photographs, taxidermy from across the U.S. and Canada, and the crackling fire.

Controlled Burns

In the 1920s, Herbert L. Stoddard, the father of wild quail management and noted author of The Bobwhite Quail: It’s habits, preservation, and increase (1931), affirmed, “Controlled burns are the best tool to improve the habitat for quail.”  Being a North Carolina Certified Burner, Scott uses controlled burns yearly on the preserve to insure the best quail and wildlife habitat.  The preserve also has 50 acres set aside solely for maintaining wild quail coveys.

Our Partners

We look forward to introducing you to our hunting partners a.k.a. “The Girls”. We currently have seasoned English Cocker Spaniels and English Pointers that have hunted South Dakota, Kansas, and of course North Carolina. We enjoy working with our dogs year-round. These athletes thrive on daily exercise and training. And during the off season, our crew enjoys a bit of summer fun in the sun…and water!
